"Passing: A California Suite" was inspired by the poetry of Los Angeles' first poet-laureate, Eloise Klein-Healy. Each piece is based off of a poem with a similar title, and the overall theme of the suite is inspired by "Passing," a poem about the ephemeral beauty of life and the deep roots that outlast generations. The music reflects this in it's use of churning rhythms in “The Beach at Sunset”, rich harmonies in “Passing,” and story-like development in “Cause.” It is a deeply emotional journey through the awe-inspiring state of California.

Passing: A California Suite has the ability to stand out as a unique and original voice in the jazz world: Pineda’s artfully carved compositions, her quartet’s cohesive sound and understated virtuosity, and her use of poetry and artwork create a sense of story that connects to the core of the human experience.
